John was born in Bruneau, Idaho in 1921 to Zoilo Echeverria
and Dolores Echevarria. He recounts his parents' immigration stories,
telling how they came from Lekeitio to make their lives in Mountain Home.
John remembers his father's livery barn and the family's home in Bruneau,
where he could often be found "talking Basque and kicking rocks" while his
older brothers were in school. He describes the Mountain Home of old,
full of Basque herders, sheep owners, and boarding houses, now legends in
the Basque community. John went to work for Montgomery Blunk, a grocery store in town, in 1942, and was drafted into the US Army shortly after, where he served in the Military Police. He returned to Mountain Home in 1946. John joined the American Legion in Mountain Home and the Eagles Lodge in Boise. He is a lifetime member of both. John has been an active member of Mountain Home's Basque community for as long as he can remember. He donates his time to help with Euskal Lagunak events, often working the dances until late at night. Looking back over the years, John discusses the Basque community's evolution in Mountain Home. |
